The Hungarian candy was invented by Italian confectioner Pietro Negro, who lived and worked in Hungary in the 1920s. Its slogan is “The throat’s chimney sweep.” The candy’s wrapper features an illustration of a chimney sweep cleaning a chimney.
The candy gets its distinctive black color from molasses, and its flavor comes from added menthol. The full recipe remains an industrial secret.
